Soy Wax is a 100% biodegradable vegetable based by-product, not a petroleum based by-product; it’s a healthy wax. Soy Wax is a renewable resource, biodegradable & cleans up easily with warm, soapy water. Many asthmatics and allergy sufferers report no breathing problems with a soy wax candle as they did with petroleum based waxes.
Soy wax is a vegetable wax made from the oil of soybeans. After harvesting, the beans are cleaned, cracked, de-hulled, and rolled into flakes. The oil is then extracted from the flakes and hydrogenated. The hydrogenation process converts some of the fatty acids in the oil from unsaturated to saturated. This process dramatically alters the melting point of the oil, making it a solid at room temperature. The oil is extracted while the rest of the bean is used in the production of soy food ingredients.
‘Normal’ candles are paraffin based and this is a sludge waste product from the petroleum industry. They are carcinogenic. The fumes are similar to that released from a diesel engine and can be as dangerous as second hand cigarette smoke. Do you want that in your life and home?
Two particularly toxic chemicals, benzene and toluene, are found in the sooty residue from burning candles. Benzene is cancer-causing and toluene affects the central nervous system.
Some people are allergic to soy. If you are allergic to soy protein, there is a chance you can still ingest soy oil and soy lecithin. The protein is the biggest culprit and comes from the protein in the soy bean..
However there have been a few rare documented reactions to soy oil and soy lecithin. If you are in any doubt, we advise that you don’t apply the soy oil to your skin.
Pregnancy and babies
Our candles are made with soy wax, essential oils, carrier oils and shea butter. We even have a plain one called Purity which does not contain any essential oils.
Please not that some essential oils are not safe for use during pregnancy and these should be communicated to your clients.
Burning and using the candle
Light the candle and let it burn for an hour. An oil pool will form. Check temperature before applying. To apply, either dip your fingers into the oil pool or pour oil directly onto your body and massage in. As the candle burns further down the container, heat is trapped so it is advisable to use a spoon to retrieve the oil rather than pouring directly onto the body.
Use a little at a time- the oil goes a long way and if you pour too much on, it will solidify on the body rather than being absorbed into the skin.
Any unused oil in the container will solidify back to a wax state for future use.
Candle scents (throw)
A candle’s scent is called a throw. Soy candles don’t generally give out a large throw. You will smell the candle before it is lit, while it is burning you may not detect a large scent. You will, however, be able to smell the essential oils used once the candle oils are applied to the skin. Please note that if we overdosed the candles with essential oils that they become ‘strong fragranced candles’, the level of essential oils in the candles would be unsafe to apply to your skin.
